We are facing a new era for Formula 1. The technical revolution is scheduled to make its debut this weekend in Melbourne with the first round of the season, the 2026 Australian Grand Prix. But it is not an easy start for Aston Martin, because it has to overcome a difficult situation in its garage. On the one hand, the clever chassis and aerodynamic design of the first single-seater AMR26 designedby Adrian Newey, and on the other hand, the Honda power unit. For now, the partnership looks more like a disaster than a triumph.

Since joining the team, Lawrence Stroll's goal has always been to take Aston Martin to the top of Formula 1.A slow but revolutionary plan has been put in place to improve all aspects of the team: from the expansion of the Silverstone headquarters and the new wind tunnel to the payment of the best technicians in the field. This is where Stroll invested most of the budget and signed Adrian Newey, paid as technical director and shareholder, now head of the all-powerful group. In effect, Aston Martin has become a blank sheet of paper on which F1's most successful designer can draw his magic with a famous pencil stroke.

By his side is Ferrari's former technical director Enrico Cardil, who only arrived at Silverstone last July. With this premise it was inevitable that Aston Martin would go through the roof for 2026, the year of a new technological revolution. But reality soon hit the dreams, Lance Stroll and especially Fernando Alonso, only 44 years old.Looking for his 33rd win

The season got off to a slow start, with the AMR26 covering just a few kilometers on track in the final days of the collective shake-up in Barcelona.A slowdown and a negative balance that the team had hoped to turn around in Bahrain. The two weeks of testing in Sahir, however, were not good: the work was reduced and fragmented. The culmination of this situation is that the Honda engine does not integrate with the chassis, transmission and aerodynamics of the single seater.car.It is precisely on the perfect integration of these elements that the battle for the title in Formula 1 in 2026 will be fought. That's why everything is difficult for Aston Martin, who practically did not move on the last day of testing due to the exhaustion of the reserve batteries, performing only six laps of installation.

The Silverstone team has been told that Adrian Newey's unpublished work has nothing to do with the performance gap, estimated by Lance Stroll to be around 4-4.5 tenths away from the top teams. The problem lies with Honda, which started development of the 2026 engine late compared to other engine manufacturers when it decided to leave Formula 1 when Red Bull Racing signed with Ford.

Japanese media spoke to House of Sakura, who explained that excessive vibration from the V6 engine is causing damage to the battery.

"We stopped the car because we felt it was not necessary to continue working in that condition. Not because an accident was imminent, but because it was dangerous. The PU department is investigating the cause and working on response and response measurements, at the same time we are using measurements on the side of the chassis. We are using the Sakura battery on the test bench and using the monocoque rudder and various countermeasures.

Takeishi said it was not possible to determine whether there was a problem with the battery's design. What is worrying is the fact that the vibrations are not caused by one thing, but by many parts, which can affect the box, making the solution to a problem more difficult and Newey believes that it will take almost a year of work.

“The vibrations have damaged the battery, so we can't say that the problem is the battery itself,” continued Takeishi. “It could be where the battery pack is attached that moves inside the car. If it had been foreseen, we would have made further changes. I suspect that we are faced with a difficult situation: many components interacting with each other that produce vibrations. It will not include the problem if it solves this problem, so if the intervention succeeds in solving a problem, it will not solve the problem.as soon as possible. All this could result in Aston Martin starting the 2026 season at the back.“My goal is to reduce vibrations before the start of the season, but also to bring the car into competitive condition,” admitted Takeishi.

Even if they have different working philosophies - as Mike Krack points out - Honda and Aston Martin want to work side by side to revive the fortunes of a partnership that has so far started in the worst possible way."The recent pre-season tests in Barcelona and Bahrain were, to be honest, a big challenge for us," said MRK head Koji Watanabe. The only way we can solve the problem is to improve performance."

In this already complicated situation, it's not even a given that Aston Martin can clear the 107% rule barrier in qualifying in Melbourne. If a gap of about four-tenths turns into a very large gap under real-world conditions, the theoretical risk would be to not come within 107% of the optimal time in Q1.An extreme case, of course, but not entirely unreasonable in light of the integration problems between the power unit and the chassis that severely limited participation in the tests. This will be at the discretion of the commissioner, who may discount the speed shown in free practice in the presence of concrete evidence. This would be a situation that would have been unthinkable a few weeks ago, but which today clearly shows the depth of the technological crisis with the start of the new 2026 era.

And even if he cannot qualify, it is not certain that the Honda engine, in its current state, can withstand the pressures of the full distance of the race, with the real risk of forcing Alonso and Stroll to retire or even prevent them from competing after the qualifying round.
